Against the darkness of the clouds, the brightness of this rainbow radiates out as a vibrantly bright banner of color. It could rightly be called “a blaze of glory,” a symbol of God’s faithfulness and Divine promise. But as I kept looking upwards, it was soon dimmed by gray-hued, turbulent tendrils writhing and interweaving until its bright beacon was completely obscured.
In the Gospel of John, Jesus explains part of the adversity we face on this earth: “The thief comes only to steal, kill and destroy.” (John 10:10)
he is comfortable with wielding deceit as a weapon so that God’s Glory is concealed. Yet it’s not God’s outward Glory that is nullified, for Paul writes in Romans 1:20, “For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes…have been clearly seen.”
Where else can God’s Glory be found and attacked, distorted, buried under clouds of misty turbulence and uncertainty?
There’s more to this scene than the photo reveals.
Beneath the rainbow, at ground level, sits a sewage processing pond. It’s raw. It’s nasty. It smells bad enough to occasionally overwhelm anyone’s senses. Symbolically speaking, it is diametrically opposed to everything the rainbow represents: new creation, freshness, creativity, new degrees of vibrancy and expanse, new beauty, brand-spanking-new-everything, in every way – yet everlasting and enduring… like His Mercies, which are “new every morning.”
The enemy works hard to persuade us to set up our “spiritual tents” on the bank of the sewage pond, and to convince us – we who bear His Light and His Glory – that we are residents there; he uses all sorts of turbulence and deception to diminish our vision and believe that the small, pungent environment is “God’s destiny” for us.
Two weeks ago, Keith Luker reminded us about destiny: “Our Father – we’re His children – He’s handed over the family business to us.” Luker continued on, “Whatever you believe about you is what will manifest. ‘As a man thinks in his heart, so is he’…..”
Don’t be deceived. We’re part of a Royal Family, carrying out a living legacy, a living testimony….it is the Light of the World Who inhabits us, and our Divine Destiny is not chained to the sewage pond…
